Aegon Adviser Attitudes Report 2021

Foreword: cost, Coronavirus and ESG shape investment trends I’m delighted to share our third Adviser attitudes report with you, which collates the views of 251 advisers about the factors influencing their investment recommendations. This year’s report comes against the backdrop of the Coronavirus pandemic, which has caused many of us to reflect on what’s important to us – family, health, the environment and of course our financial wellbeing. In what has been a difficult period, I see this as the main, positive effect of the pandemic. When the extent of the human tragedy began to hit headlines, stock markets plummeted. Such an event has no precedent in world history and the fiscal reaction from governments has also, fortunately, been unprecedented. We started the year, as did advisers, by making huge efforts to reassure customers that markets would recover, and fortunately that has largely been the case. Our research showed that 36% of advisers saw demand for retirement advice increase during the pandemic, with most demand coming from older clients. While 86% urged clients to ‘stick to the plan’, our results demonstrate the immediate financial impact of the pandemic and the important role advisers have had in helping people reassess their circumstances.
